    ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Born on November 14, 1887 in Manhufe (Amarante), Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso belonged to the first generation of Portuguese modernist painters. He stood out for the exceptional quality of his work and for the dialogue he established with the world's historical vanguards of the early 20th century. His paintings are openly articulated with movements such as Cubism, Futurism and Expressionism. His death, on October 25, 1918, aged just 30, would spell the abrupt end of a pictorial work in full maturity and a promising international career, but still in affirmation. His origins, stylistic inconsistency and premature death brought some difficulties to the recognition of his work, both nationally and internationally, but with the opening of the  Centro de Arte Moderna da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, real and permanent access to some of his works opened up and finally enabled his historiographical recognition.
